Hey readers. I say readers, because there’s no Friday video this week. This is partially because I posted a video on Wednesday, and I don’t want to do two videos in a single week, but mostly because I forgot the USB to connect my phone to my computer. Instead we’re going to talk about upcoming Cities of the Mind stuff!
I’m going to be changing the theme again. While I like Moesia, it’s having a lot of small problems that are driving me crazy. That’s probably not the fault of the theme as much as my own desire to constantly tweak things. In the end, I decided the really awesome home page just took too long to load, and the theme is not as responsive as it claims to be. I don’t want to imply Moesia is anything other than a great theme–it is!–but it’s basically a really sexy shirt that doesn’t quite fit me.
The other big reason I want to change the theme is that I’ve been reading a lot of blogs about blog design as part of my job over at First Site Guide. I’ve been doing some things wrong, and I’m going to do them better. This line of work is, by its nature, a constant learning experience, and I love that, but I have to keep on keeping on, or it doesn’t work.
Potential Schedule Disruptions
I let last week slide for three reasons. First, I was busy, second, it was my birthday week, and, three, I wanted to evaluate my metrics without new posts. In other words, I wanted to see what my blog’s baseline was. It’s still not anywhere near where I’d like, but it’s going places.
It’s going to be a busy couple weeks, and I may not have too much time to devote to the blog. I’m headed to Las Vegas to visit my family, then roadtripping to California to visit a friend. Two weeks of travel might possibly disrupt my blogging schedule. I’m also short on finished guest posts at the moment.
I’m going to work really hard to make sure we have a solid three post per week schedule, here, and two at My Name is Connor.
As such, I have done something a bit out of character for me, and planned ahead.
How Do I Get Rid of SEMalt?
Many of you have probably seen SEMalt and (possibly) Buttons-for-website in your “referrer” widget on the dashboard. I’m going to explain who they are, why they suck, and how to get rid of them. I’ve been meaning to do it for awhile, but it’s just been too much of a hassle.
This is going to be a new feature, and I’m not 100% sure how I’m going to implement it yet, but every week I’ll share some of the coolest articles I’ve stumbled across.
I’m going to go into detail about what you’re looking at when you’re looking at all those numbers.
How to Get More Out of What You’ve Already Written
There are few easy ways to make sure your posts are pulling their full weight, and I’m going to run through them.
Website Layout Plan
This honestly isn’t going to change much. The flow of posts and pages was something I put a lot of thought into for the last website iteration, but I’m going to explain how and why I made the choices I did.
This site changes all the time because I am a perpetual tinkerer. However, I don’t really ever explain what’s changing, how it’s changing, or why it’s changing. This is going to be a page of links, and I’m going to write a short article about various changes I make whenever I make them. This will include evaluations of plugins, themes, and various stylistic changes. If my Subscription box changes, you’ll know why it’s changed, and so on.
What I Need From You:
Just let me know if there are any topics you want to see covered which aren’t mentioned here, or any of the ones that are which you really want to see–I’ll give them precedence. And, of course, suggestions for how to improve my site! Thanks for your support!
